"I feel they bullied him, to be honest." Those are the words Debbie Beard used at a pre-inquest hearing on Thursday to describe what her husband Matt experienced at Burnley Football Club in the final months of his life.
Matt Beard died on September 20, 2025, aged 47, at the Countess of Chester Hospital after suffering a hypoxic brain injury. He had been appointed Burnley Women's manager in June 2025 and left just two months later. He never took another job.
"Matt left Burnley not to go to another job," Debbie told Ruthin Coroner's Office in Denbighshire. "He left Burnley because he was not happy there. Basically, they didn't allow him to move on."
The inquest has been delayed for more evidence
Senior coroner John Gittins concluded that "further work needs doing" before the full inquest can proceed. Statements from Burnley and Leicester City Women — who were linked with hiring Beard after his Burnley exit — have already been collected, alongside GP reports. Enquiries will be directed to agent Curtis Dawes and the League Managers Association, both of whom Beard had contact with in his final weeks. Burnley will be invited to participate as an interested party.
The family also want a video recorded by Beard before his death to be included in evidence. That request alone tells you how much they want the full picture on the record.
Beard's family have been clear in framing his departure from Burnley as a "catalyst" in the decline of his mental health. Debbie described a man who masked his struggles — "He was the type of person who would say, 'yes, I'm fine', and he wouldn't admit it. You could see it in his manner at home."
A career that shaped women's football in England
Beard managed for 17 years across Millwall, Chelsea, Liverpool, Boston Breakers, West Ham, Bristol City and back to Liverpool again. He won back-to-back WSL titles with Liverpool between 2012 and 2014, then returned in 2021 to win the Women's Championship and earn promotion. In 2023-24 he guided Liverpool to fourth in the WSL and claimed his second manager of the season award.
Last month he was inducted into the WSL Hall of Fame. The honour felt belated given what he built — but it came. What didn't come was the chance to rebuild after Burnley.
The full inquest date is yet to be set.
