"Every time I call my dog, I'll think of you — like I own you." That's Bernardo Silva's explanation for naming his French bulldog after John Stones, and it's exactly as funny as it sounds.

Silva has officially signed for Real Madrid, and John (the bulldog, not the centre-back) is making the move to Spain with him. Stones the human is also leaving the Etihad this summer, but he's not expected to follow Bernardo to the Bernabéu. The dog, however, has no say in the matter.

A friendship with teeth

The backstory goes back to when Silva arrived at Manchester City in 2017. He and Stones clicked immediately, and when Silva eventually got a dog, there was apparently never any real debate about the name.

Stones recounted the conversation in a 2023 Goal feature: "Bernardo said to me, 'If I get a dog, John, I'm going to call it John. John Stones.' So I was like, 'Alright, why?' He said because every time I call my dog or shout at my dog, I'll think of you and it'll be like telling you to come to me, like I own you."

Silva brought the dog into training. You can picture how that went down in the dressing room.

To his credit, Silva has also framed it as genuine affection — not just a long-running wind-up. Speaking to City's media in 2021, he described John as "a beautiful boy" who is "very intelligent." Whether Stones considers that a compliment is unclear.

What it means on the pitch

The football side of this transfer carries real weight. Silva was one of the most technically complete midfielders in Europe during his City years — a player who could press, create, and carry the ball in tight spaces. At 30, he arrives at the Bernabéu with plenty left. Madrid's midfield odds in La Liga next season just got considerably shorter.

As for Stones, his City exit closes a chapter on one of the more quietly underrated defensive careers of the Premier League era. His destination is still unclear.

John the bulldog, at least, knows exactly where he's headed.
