Argentina just lost their biggest warm-up opportunity before defending their World Cup title. The highly anticipated Finalissima match against Spain has been cancelled, leaving coach Lionel Scaloni scrambling with just three months to go.

This was supposed to be the perfect test. Spain are the reigning European champions, and this match would have given Argentina a proper gauge of where they stand against top European opposition.

The game was scheduled for March 27 in Qatar, but the ongoing conflict in the Middle East made it impossible to stage. The Argentine Football Association (AFA) tried to reschedule with UEFA but couldn't find a suitable date. They also had to scrap a planned friendly against Qatar.

Why This Match Mattered So Much

Since lifting the 2022 World Cup trophy, Argentina has been absolutely dominant. They've won the 2024 Copa América and gone through South American qualifying with only four defeats in 18 matches. They've also won all 11 friendlies they've played.

But here's the problem – those friendlies haven't been against top-tier opponents. Argentina has played teams like Curaçao, Indonesia, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Angola. Great for business and Messi's global appeal, not so great for serious preparation.

Scaloni desperately needed this Spain match for three key reasons. First, to assess captain Lionel Messi's fitness and availability. Second, to evaluate his starting lineup. Third, to test younger prospects against elite competition.

The Messi Question Looms Large

The biggest uncertainty hanging over Argentina is whether Messi will even be available. The legend will turn 39 during the World Cup, and he's been notably cautious about committing.

"I'm going to take it day by day," Messi said late last year. "Being honest and trying to be realistic and feel good." That's not exactly a ringing endorsement of his participation.

For punters considering Argentina's World Cup chances, Messi's availability is obviously the biggest factor. Without him, their odds would shift dramatically, even with their recent dominance.

The AFA is now in frantic negotiations to find replacement opponents for the March international window. So far, they haven't announced anything concrete. They also haven't confirmed any final warm-up matches in late May before the World Cup kicks off in June.

This could create an unprecedented situation. Argentina might arrive at a World Cup without having faced a single European rival during the entire qualifying cycle. That's never happened before in their history.

The strategy of prioritizing commercial matches over quality preparation is now backfiring. Before the 2022 World Cup, Argentina played Germany, Italy, and Estonia. This time around, the level of opposition has been significantly lower.

Argentina begins their World Cup defense against Algeria in Kansas on June 16. They'll follow that with matches against Austria and Jordan. Without proper preparation against elite teams, even the defending champions could face unexpected challenges.
