Julián Álvarez returned to Atlético Madrid's training ground on Monday and made one thing absolutely clear: he's not interested in being there. According to Mundo Deportivo, the Argentine striker completely "lost his temper" and delivered a blunt message to the club — "Count me out."
That's not a man easing back into pre-season. That's a man who has already mentally left.
The situation has been building all summer. Álvarez went public with his desire to leave during the World Cup, stating he wants to "fulfill his dream" — widely understood to mean Barcelona. The Catalans have been equally transparent, submitting a €100 million bid that Atlético swatted away, while Real Madrid's somewhat theatrical €150 million offer was rejected just as firmly. Atlético even filed a formal complaint with the RFEF over Barcelona's pursuit. The club is digging in.
Why he wants out — and why now
The frustration likely runs deeper than just wanting a bigger club. Álvarez joined Atlético in 2024 off the back of back-to-back title wins at Manchester City, turning down PSG and Arsenal in the process. He got off to a solid start — 29 goals in 54 appearances — but the ceiling at the Metropolitano became clear fast.
Atlético Madrid have won La Liga twice in the 21st century. Last season, even a Copa del Rey final appearance ended in a shock defeat to Real Sociedad. Antoine Griezmann departed for MLS without a trophy. Álvarez, at 26, is watching that particular film and deciding he doesn't want to be in the sequel.
Making things worse on Monday: neither Diego Simeone nor CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín were at the training ground when Álvarez returned. He reportedly wanted to speak to both about a move. Neither was available. If you wanted to design a situation to make an unhappy player angrier, you'd design that.
Barcelona's problem if this doesn't happen
For Hansi Flick, the urgency is real. Ferran Torres is reportedly close to joining PSG, which would leave Barcelona without a natural centre-forward. The club can't seriously compete in the Champions League with Anthony Gordon or Karim Adeyemi as their lead striker — and at some point they'll have to stop waiting on Álvarez and pivot to another target.
Atlético, for their part, have shown zero appetite for negotiation. They rejected €100m. They rejected €150m. They're not bluffing. Álvarez is under contract until 2030, and Simeone is not the type to manage a player who doesn't want to be there indefinitely — but the club hierarchy clearly has no intention of making this easy.
The transfer window doesn't stay open forever. Every day this drags on, Barcelona's options narrow and Atlético's leverage, technically, grows. Álvarez can rage all he wants — and it sounds like he is — but the contract says 2030.
