Monaco striker Paris Brunner is facing a possible ban after being referred to the disciplinary body of the French league for celebrating a goal with a throat-slitting gesture.
The German forward leveled the scoreline with a superb long-range strike in Saturday's 1-1 draw against Strasbourg, a result that kept Monaco unbeaten this season in Ligue 1. But it was his celebration, not the finish, that has landed him in trouble.
The National Council for Ethics and Professional Conduct, an independent body within French soccer, addressed the incident in a statement on Monday. "Players must behave courteously and respectfully towards their opponents, as well as towards their supporters," the council said, adding that "passion for football" must be controlled and that those involved in the game have a duty to set an example through their behavior.
Brunner's Apology
Brunner spoke after the match and said he had not intended to show disrespect, adding he was sorry if his gesture had hurt anyone. He described the celebration as "clumsy" and said he "should not have done it."
The council acknowledged his apology but made clear it would not end the matter. "While these apologies are welcome, they do not erase the reality of the gesture, which is liable to constitute a breach of the obligations of respect, setting an example and self-control," it said.
The disciplinary referral comes at a time when Brunner has been in excellent form, scoring three goals in four matches this season.
