Max Dowman is starting to turn heads at Arsenal, and now he has a fairly significant one nodding in his direction. Mikel Merino has compared the 16-year-old to Lamine Yamal after Dowman scored twice and set up a goal in Arsenal's 4-2 Carabao Cup win away at Ipswich Town on Tuesday.
It was Dowman's first taste of senior football this season, and he made the most of it. Merino himself was among the scorers that night and also teed up Noni Madueke, giving him a front-row view of the teenager's impact.
"Honestly, he is an unbelievable talent," Merino said, quoted by football.london. "We knew it, but every time he goes on the pitch and plays against grown men - even being 16 or 17 - he makes the difference. He is a big talent and we have to take care of him. We have to keep pushing him."
Merino also stressed that Dowman still has plenty of developing to do. "He needs to keep learning - eyes and ears open always. There is still big room for improvement in a lot of areas, and he knows that. So we are going to be by his side trying to get him to his best level."
The Yamal Parallel
Comparisons to some of the game's biggest names have followed Dowman, but the one to Barcelona's Lamine Yamal is the most obvious given their shared age and the timing of their breakthroughs. Yamal broke into Barcelona's first team at 16 back in 2023, going on to register seven goals and nine assists in 50 appearances across all competitions that season.
Whether Dowman can come close to matching those numbers this campaign remains to be seen, and Merino was careful not to load too much onto the teenager's shoulders. Instead, he focused on the balancing act of nurturing a special talent without letting it go to his head.
"It is a thin line," Merino explained. "It is very difficult to have equilibrium sometimes with him, because obviously, you want him to shine and you want him to express himself and show everyone the talent that he has. But, at the same time, you have to sometimes remind them that they are human beings and they are part of a bigger squad and team."
"The good thing with these kinds of players - Lamine and Max - is that they are special talents, but at the same time, they are very humble. They are always keen to learn and listen to the veterans. That is priceless. So we are very happy to have him, but at the same time, he knows that we are here to help him. And, sometimes, even if we push him a little bit, he knows it's for his own good. He is a very good kid."
Fearless Under Pressure
Beyond the technical ability, what stands out to those watching Dowman is his composure against senior opposition. Merino sees that same trait in Yamal, and it's where he draws the closest comparison between the two.
"I would say there are some similarities in terms of their character," Merino said. "They don't care about the spotlight. They thrive when pressure is at its highest. They are always up for the challenge, and they are not shy at all - even facing the biggest names in the game. So, they are very similar."
