Manchester United want Atalanta's Ederson, and right now, nobody is closer to getting him. Reports from Italy suggest United have intensified contact with the 26-year-old Brazilian in recent days and are considered the club with the best chance of completing a deal.

The asking price is somewhere between €45m and €50m. Atletico Madrid supposedly had a verbal agreement with the player earlier this year but have stalled on the fee. United's apparent willingness to meet Atalanta's valuation is what's pushed them to the front of the queue.

What Ederson actually brings

He's not a glamour signing. Ederson is six feet tall, combative, built like he enjoys a tackle, and fights for every ball. His value is in the unglamorous work — defensive midfield, covering ground, absorbing pressure. Exactly the kind of player who makes the players around him look better.

That context matters here. United's win over Liverpool last weekend was chaotic — five goals, most of them defensive calamities — but the midfield's physicality and resilience was the deciding factor. Ederson is essentially a more durable, younger version of what that midfield needs. Casemiro, meanwhile, is reportedly in talks with Inter Miami about a summer exit. At 32, with his legs going, the writing is on the wall.

United's director of football Jason Wilcox is said to be an admirer, which matters when assessing how serious this interest really is. Juventus have been deterred by Atalanta's stance. Atletico have gone cold. That leaves United, and Ederson entering the final 12 months of his contract in Bergamo — a combination that should, in theory, help bring the price down, or at least prevent it from going up.

Why this deal makes sense now

A €45-50m outlay on a holding midfielder is significant but defensible. Ederson is in his prime, proven at the highest level of Serie A, and fills a genuine gap. United's midfield odds in any kind of title conversation depend on getting this type of profile right.

The door is open. Atletico couldn't walk through it. Whether United do is the question heading into the summer window.
