Liverpool have signed Ronald Araújo on loan from Barcelona — and the 27-year-old Uruguayan isn't arriving as a marquee statement. He's arriving because Liverpool's centre-back depth is in ruins.
Virgil van Dijk is 35 and entering the final year of his contract. Ibrahima Konaté left for Real Madrid on a free. Jérémy Jacquet — the €70 million January signing from Rennais — went straight into shoulder surgery after his deal was announced. Giovanni Leoni tore his ACL on debut back in September. Joe Gomez made just 33 appearances all of last season. That's not a depth chart, it's a casualty list.
What Liverpool are actually getting
At his best, Araújo is a top-five centre-back in the world — physically imposing, aggressive in transition, and flexible enough to fill in at right back. The problem is that "at his best" has been an increasingly rare sight. Red cards have defined his recent years more than his defending: most infamously the one against PSG in the 2024 Champions League, and more recently a sending-off against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge that preceded a weeks-long break from football to address mental health struggles.
He made 38 appearances for Barcelona last season but started only 16. A muscle injury then ruled him out of the World Cup with Uruguay entirely. The talent is real. The reliability is the question Andoni Iraola now has to answer.
Liverpool will cover his full €16 million annual salary — not a small commitment for a loan — and hold a non-mandatory €55 million purchase option if things go well. Given where Liverpool's season currently sits, that's a bet they're clearly willing to take.
The bigger picture at Anfield
Context matters here: Liverpool spent €500 million in the summer of 2025, missed Champions League qualification, and sacked Arne Slot. Iraola was brought in to rebuild. A defensive unit this threadbare makes Liverpool's Premier League title odds harder to justify regardless of how well the Araújo loan works out.
If he rediscovers his form alongside van Dijk, Liverpool have the bones of a genuinely good defensive partnership. But that's asking a lot of a player who's spent the better part of two years being managed rather than trusted.
