Toronto FC are signing Niklas Dorsch from Heidenheim in a deal worth around $4.3 million over five years, according to Fabrizio Romano. Paperwork is still being finalized, but the 28-year-old defensive midfielder is heading to MLS.
Dorsch came through the Bayern Munich academy and made one Bundesliga appearance for the first team in 2017/18 — a footnote on a CV that turned out to be far more substantial than that single outing suggests. He went on to play for Gent in Belgium before returning to Germany with Augsburg and then Heidenheim, accumulating over 100 Bundesliga appearances along the way. Not a star, but a reliable, experienced operator at a genuinely competitive level of European football.
What Toronto are actually getting
That context matters for Toronto. This isn't a player cashing out on one last payday in a league he outgrew years ago. Dorsch is 28, physically in his prime for a defensive midfielder, and brings the kind of positional discipline and press resistance that MLS clubs routinely struggle to develop from within.
Toronto have had their share of dysfunction in recent seasons — roster construction that never quite cohered, defensive midfield a persistent weak point. A player who has spent years operating as the base of a midfield in the Bundesliga fills a specific, real need.
The five-year length of the deal is notable too. This isn't a one-season rental or a bridge signing. Toronto are betting on Dorsch being a cornerstone, not a stopgap. That's either confident long-term planning or a significant financial commitment to a player one injury away from complications. MLS futures markets on Toronto making the playoffs next season just got a slightly more credible case behind them.
The clubs are still working through the final documentation. Until that's done, nothing is official — but Romano reporting it at this stage means it's close.
