The tributes were always going to come from everywhere. ICC Chairman Jay Shah got there early, posting a personal message on Instagram recalling the moment he handed Messi an India cricket jersey during the Argentine's visit to the country. "Your profound humility stood out just as much as your unmatched genius on the pitch," Shah wrote. It's a genuine sentiment, and the crossover image of Messi holding a cricket shirt is exactly the kind of thing that underlines just how far his reach extends beyond football.
What he actually won
The career arc matters here. Messi appeared at six World Cups, from 2006 through to 2026. He scored 21 goals across 34 World Cup matches, including eight goals and four assists at the 2026 tournament alone — capped by his first-ever World Cup hat-trick against Algeria. For a player whose entire narrative for years was built around World Cup failure, that's a brutal rewrite.
The 2022 final in Qatar was the pivot point. Argentina beat France 4-2 on penalties after a 3-3 draw through extra time. Messi scored twice in normal time and converted his spot-kick. It ended a 36-year wait for Argentina's third World Cup and buried the 2014 final loss to Germany that had defined so much of his story. He'd already helped Argentina end a 28-year wait for a major trophy at the 2021 Copa America, then won the tournament again in 2024.
He also retired once before — briefly, in 2016, after another Copa America final defeat to Chile. That reversal eventually delivered everything. This one feels permanent.

Messi will keep playing for Inter Miami in MLS. The club sit fourth in the standings with 42 points from 12 wins, six draws, and four defeats — 10 points behind Nashville SC. Whether his continued presence can close that gap is a live question, though his output at 39 still shapes Inter Miami's entire attacking structure and their odds in every competition they enter.
