Luka Modrić is staying at AC Milan. The 40-year-old has signed a contract extension running until June 2027, committing to at least one more season in the red and black.
Thirty-seven appearances and two goals in his debut season — solid numbers for any midfielder, genuinely remarkable for someone who turns 41 in September. Whatever you expected from Modrić after 13 years at Real Madrid, he made himself a functioning part of the squad rather than a trophy signing coasting on reputation.
A fresh start under Amorim
The bigger story might be what's happening around him. Ruben Amorim has replaced Massimiliano Allegri, who couldn't get Milan into the Champions League last season. That failure is the backdrop to everything this summer — the rebuild, the coaching change, the decisions about who stays and who doesn't. Modrić staying signals he's part of the solution, not the furniture being moved around it.
Milan said he brings "experience and quality to the service of the team, both on and off the pitch, with humility and great passion." Strip out the club-speak and the point stands: a Ballon d'Or winner who still shows up, still contributes, and doesn't create dressing room problems is worth keeping.
What it means for the season ahead
A Milan side chasing a return to European football with an ageing World Cup winner in midfield is a specific kind of bet. Modrić adds craft and composure in the middle, but the minutes will need managing over a long campaign. How Amorim uses him — when he rests him, how he builds around him — will matter more than the signing itself.
He'll wear the number 14 shirt again. That much, at least, is settled.
