Jeremy Monga is heading to Swansea City on a season-long loan from Manchester City, with the 17-year-old winger due to travel to South Wales for a medical before Tuesday's 23:00 BST deadline. At the same time, Leo Walta is being shown the door toward Los Angeles and MLS.
Monga's story is genuinely eye-catching. A Leicester City academy product, he made his senior debut for the Foxes at 15, went on to make 30 Championship appearances last season, and became the youngest scorer in Championship history when he netted in Leicester's 2-1 defeat to Preston North End in August 2024. That's not a career trajectory — it's a sprint.
Man City clearly agreed. Hugo Viana signed him to a five-year deal earlier this summer, calling him an "exciting player" who has "already made huge strides in his young career." Now they want him getting regular minutes in the Championship rather than sitting on City's bench. Loan him to a side currently unbeaten in the league, managed by Vitor Matos, with genuine structure and purpose — it makes sense for everyone.
What Monga actually adds
Swansea have already brought in Elijah Just, Moussa Yeo, and Joseph Opoku in wide areas this window, so it's not as though they're light out there. But Monga brings a different profile — a teenager with genuine elite-level backing, Championship pedigree beyond his years, and enough pace to stretch defenses. He's an England Under-19 international playing at a level most players his age haven't sniffed.
For Swansea's promotion hopes, their unbeaten start already makes them worth watching in the Championship outright markets. Adding a player of Monga's upside only strengthens that picture. Their midfield rebuild — Eustaquio from Porto, Just from Motherwell, Iorpenda from Huddersfield closing — suggests a club building properly, not patching.
Walta's quiet exit
Walta's departure is the quieter half of this story, but it tells you something too. The Finnish international was left out of Saturday's 3-0 win at Derby entirely. One league goal for the club — against Charlton on the final day last season — and just two appearances so far this term. When a permanent signing doesn't make a matchday squad after a month, the writing is usually on the wall.
Los Angeles gets a young winger with something to prove. Swansea get the squad space and the wage bill room to bring in Monga. Clean enough swap.
- Jeremy Monga, 17, joins on a season-long loan from Manchester City
- Monga holds the record as the youngest Championship scorer
- Leo Walta set to join an MLS side in Los Angeles
- Tom Iorpenda from Huddersfield also closing
- Swansea host Watford on Tuesday night (19:45 BST), still unbeaten in the league
Swansea's next test is Watford at the Swansea.com Stadium on Tuesday — deadline day and a league fixture on the same night. Monga almost certainly won't be eligible for that one, but the window that follows it is where his impact will start to register.
