"It was a decision that hurt and still hurts deep inside." Lionel Messi announced his retirement from international football on August 31, closing a 20-year chapter that reshaped what's possible in the sport.
203 caps. 124 goals. Six World Cups. A 2022 title in Qatar that ended 36 years of national heartbreak. And a final appearance in this year's World Cup final — a loss to Spain — before walking away for good.
What the numbers actually mean
Messi is Argentina's most-capped player and their all-time top scorer, and he holds the South American scoring record outright. In the 2026 tournament alone, he put up eight goals and four assists — including Argentina's first-ever World Cup hat-trick against Algeria. He finished second in the all-time World Cup scoring charts with 21 goals in 34 matches, pipped only by Kylian Mbappé's 22.
He won the Copa America in 2021 — ending a 28-year title drought — then backed it up with the 2024 edition and sandwiched the Qatar World Cup in between. That three-year stretch between 2021 and 2024 is the reason this retirement lands differently from the false start in 2016, when he walked away after the Copa America final loss to Chile and then reversed course.
This time, there's no reversal coming.
The Inter Miami question
Messi will continue at club level with Inter Miami in MLS, where they currently sit fourth with 42 points — ten back from Nashville SC. How much runway he has left at club level is genuinely unclear, but at 39 (he turns 39 in June 2026), the international stage was always going to go first.
Argentina's attack now has to rebuild without the player who has defined it for two decades. The young talent Messi referenced in his statement — players he said "deserve to be here" — will be stepping into a void that no single player can fill. Argentina's odds at the next Copa America just got significantly harder to price.
He signed off with a line that cuts through the noise: "I leave with peace and pride, knowing that together with my teammates we gave you moments we once dreamed of."
Hard to argue with that.
