"It is recognised not only for what I do on the pitch but also off the pitch." That line from Messi tells you exactly why this award is different from every other honour he's collected — and he's collected a lot of them.

The 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports goes to Lionel Messi, making him the first footballer in the award's history to receive it. The jury, led by foundation president Teresa Perales, voted to grant him one of Spain's most prestigious international honours — one that evaluates impact on society, values, and social contribution alongside athletic performance.

Not just another trophy

Messi has eight Ballon d'Ors, a World Cup, back-to-back Copa Americas (2021 and 2024), an Olympic gold medal from Beijing, nine La Liga MVP awards, and two MLS MVP honours. The career summary sells itself. But the Princess of Asturias isn't handed out for goals and trophies — it's a different category of recognition entirely, and the jury clearly felt his off-field work earned it.

He seemed genuinely moved by that distinction. "The truth is that for me it is a great pride," he said, adding a "big hug to everyone" in characteristically understated fashion.

Whether you view Messi as the greatest footballer ever or simply one of them, the argument for this award isn't really about football. It's about what he's represented — in Argentina, across Latin America, and globally — for over two decades. That's harder to quantify than assist tallies, and arguably more lasting.

What this means beyond the headlines

At 37, still playing in MLS, Messi keeps adding chapters most footballers never get to write. The Princess of Asturias has been awarded to athletes like Rafael Nadal and Valentín Massana — serious company. Messi is now in that conversation in a way that goes beyond sport.

First footballer to win it. That's the fact that will outlast the ceremony.
