Messi Family Slams 'Irresponsible' Death Rumours as Jorge Messi Receives Treatment.

"A person's health and the peace of mind of their loved ones should not be the subject of speculation or irresponsible media interest." That line from the Messi family statement says everything about what Lionel has been carrying into this World Cup.

On Thursday, false reports circulated in Argentina claiming Jorge Messi — Lionel's father, agent, and closest football confidant — had died. The family was forced to issue a public statement confirming Jorge is alive, undergoing medical treatment for an undisclosed illness, and "recovering and progressing favorably."

The tears after the Algeria goal finally make sense

After Argentina's 3-0 opening win over Algeria, Messi broke down after scoring his first goal — the one that drew him level with Miroslav Klose as the all-time World Cup top scorer with 16 goals. At the time, most assumed it was pure emotion. It was something heavier than that.

"I've had some tough days. It wasn't related to soccer," Messi said after the match. "And those feelings were because of that."

He thanked teammates, coaching staff, and the delegation for helping him through it. That's a lot to be managing while leading Argentina at a World Cup.

Jorge Messi's role went far beyond fatherhood

Jorge isn't just Messi's dad. He's been the architect of his son's entire career off the pitch — negotiating contracts at Barcelona, brokering the moves to PSG and Inter Miami, and managing image rights alongside investments in real estate, hotels, and restaurants. He was the one who took a young Lionel to La Masia in the early 2000s when this whole story began.

The pair were convicted together on tax evasion charges in Spain in 2016, avoided prison, and kept going. Their bond runs through every chapter of Messi's life.

Argentina face Austria on Monday in Dallas. Messi will play. The family has asked for privacy. The only updates will come through them directly — not through speculation.
