Mbappé Is Back on the Cover — And His Season Earned It.

"To be featured on the cover of an EA Sports FC title for the first time is a very special moment for me," said Kylian Mbappé. First time. Despite years of being the face of the predecessor franchise, this is officially his debut as an EA Sports FC cover star — and he's made a reasonable case for it.

EA has confirmed the Real Madrid forward as the cover athlete for EA Sports FC 27 Ultimate Edition, ending a four-year absence from the franchise's main cover. He'll also front EA Sports FC Mobile, keeping his relationship with the series intact across platforms.

A season that made the argument for him

This wasn't a legacy pick. Mbappé finished as La Liga's top scorer in both of his seasons since joining Real Madrid in 2024. Then in Europe, he scored 15 Champions League goals to claim the 2025/26 Golden Boot — not a consolation prize, the actual award for the best individual performer in the continent's biggest club competition.

On the international stage, he became the World Cup's all-time leading goalscorer and the first player to win the Golden Boot twice. Put those next to each other and the cover selection writes itself.

The announcement kicks off a week of EA Sports FC 27 content, with the official gameplay trailer landing on Thursday, July 23 at 9 a.m. PT / 12 p.m. ET. Ratings, new features, and whatever EA is calling its headline mode this year will presumably follow.

For the game itself, having Mbappé at peak relevance — rather than coasting on reputation — is exactly the kind of cover that actually moves units. Four years ago felt like a different era. Right now, he's the most statistically dominant forward in European football. The timing is hard to argue with.
