Man Utd Tracking Shea Charles as a Cheaper Path Out of Their Midfield Crisis.

Manuel Ugarte is heading for the exit at Old Trafford, and Manchester United's answer might be a 22-year-old from Southampton who scored a late FA Cup winner against Arsenal on Saturday. That's the transfer window in a nutshell, really.

The Daily Mail reports that United's recruitment team has Shea Charles on their radar as a budget-conscious alternative to replacing Ugarte — valued at around £20 million, he's a fraction of the cost of the nine-figure names being mentioned for Casemiro's slot. The distinction matters. United are hunting in two very different price brackets this summer, and Charles falls firmly in the second tier.

Why Ugarte is likely gone

Ugarte arrived with a compelling narrative — a reunion with Ruben Amorim, the manager who built his career at Sporting CP. It never translated. Amorim initially preferred Bruno Fernandes in a deeper role alongside Casemiro, and under interim boss Michael Carrick, Ugarte hasn't started a single one of his 10 games in charge. At 24, he still has time to rebuild elsewhere. Juventus, Napoli, Ajax and Galatasaray are all reportedly circling.

That leaves United potentially short of options in the middle. Casemiro is already confirmed to be leaving. If Ugarte follows, Kobbie Mainoo is essentially the only senior central midfielder on the books. That's not a squad — that's a gap.

What Charles actually brings

Charles is Northern Ireland's midfield anchor — eligible through his mother — and a product of Manchester City's academy, where he spent 12 years before Southampton signed him in 2023. The move was facilitated by Jason Wilcox, now United's director of football, which explains the connection. Charles didn't feature for Southampton in the Premier League last season, instead spending the campaign on loan at Sheffield Wednesday. He's back at St Mary's now, part of their push for another promotion.

Everton and two unnamed Premier League clubs are also keeping tabs. Rangers would like a look but can't match the wages on offer from clubs in England's top flight.

One caveat hanging over all of this: United's budget shifts considerably depending on whether they're in the Champions League next season. They currently sit third in the Premier League, so the bigger spends are still in play. Miss out on Europe, and Charles stops being a contingency and starts being the plan.
