"I'll do everything possible for him to be there," Lionel Scaloni said of Messi back in March. That's not a guarantee. That's a coach holding his breath.
Argentina's 2026 World Cup squad announcement is imminent. FIFA's deadline for provisional rosters is May 11, with final lists locked in by May 30. The Argentines haven't confirmed an exact date, but expect something within the next two weeks. Given how much of the world's attention hinges on one name, Scaloni won't be sitting on this longer than he has to.
The Messi question no one can answer yet
Messi was included in the provisional roster, per reports — which is something. But provisional means exactly that. The man himself has been vague for months, saying he'd take time to assess his physical condition and mindset before committing. At 37, playing in MLS with Inter Miami, the question isn't desire — it's durability.
Scaloni put it plainly: "It's a question that's more for him." He added that "for the good of soccer he has to be there" — which is both true and completely beside the point if Messi's body says otherwise. The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner doesn't owe anyone a farewell tour.
If he does go, Argentina's odds of defending the title sharpen considerably. If he doesn't, they're still a serious team — Julian Alvarez, Alexis Mac Allister, and Emiliano Martinez form a core that could hurt anyone — but the ceiling drops, and so would the betting markets around them.
What the squad will look like
The final group must include between 23 and 26 players, with at least three goalkeepers. Beyond the established names, Scaloni used the March internationals to test fringe options like Tomas Palacios and Gabriel Rojas. Whether those auditions translated into final squad spots is the more under-discussed question heading into the announcement.
Argentina will base themselves at the Sporting KC Training Center in Kansas City, staying at the Origin Kansas City Riverfront hotel. Their Group J opener against Algeria is June 16 at Arrowhead Stadium — meaning any injury-related changes to the squad must be sorted by June 15.
The reigning champions have the infrastructure, the depth, and the experience to go deep. Whether the greatest player of his generation is along for the ride is something only Messi can answer — and he hasn't yet.
