The 2028 Los Angeles Olympics just got a whole lot bigger for soccer fans. LA28 announced on Tuesday that six stadiums across the United States will host Olympic soccer matches, creating a coast-to-coast football festival.

Here's the clever part: teams won't be flying back and forth across America during the group stage. Instead, the tournament is designed to move from East to West as teams progress. Think of it as a football road trip that ends at the iconic Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

The journey kicks off in New York at NYCFC's brand new Etihad Park in Queens, which opens in 2027. This is a big deal because it's the first soccer-specific stadium actually in New York City. From there, the tournament moves through Columbus Crew's ScottsMiracle-Gro Field, Nashville SC's Geodis Park, and St. Louis CITY SC's Energizer Park.

MLS Stadiums Take Center Stage

Five of the six venues are home to MLS clubs, showing how far American soccer infrastructure has come. The San José Earthquakes' PayPal Park also made the cut for group stage matches.

Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego will likely host the final group games before teams head to the Rose Bowl. It's shared by San Diego State football, San Diego FC, and San Diego Wave FC, making it a versatile venue.

The Rose Bowl handles all the knockout rounds starting July 24, 2028. The men's gold medal match happens on July 28, while the women's final wraps things up on July 29.

Historic Women's Tournament Expansion

Here's something groundbreaking: for the first time ever, more women's teams will compete than men's teams. The women's tournament expands to 16 teams while the men's stays at 12. This makes LA28 the first female-majority Olympic Games in history.

LA28 is also working with the IOC to potentially start matches before the July 14 opening ceremony. This gives players more recovery time between games, which could lead to better quality matches and fewer upsets from tired legs.

For anyone thinking about planning trips or placing future bets on Olympic soccer, keep in mind that schedules for each stadium won't be announced until before April 2026. That's when the first ticket purchasing window opens, though the initial presale starting April 2 is limited to Southern California and Oklahoma City residents only.

This coast-to-coast setup means more American fans can experience Olympic soccer without traveling to LA. It's a smart move that spreads the excitement and makes the beautiful game accessible to millions more people.
