Jürgen Klopp is on the verge of becoming Germany's next head coach, with final negotiations set for this weekend in New York and a contract running until 2030 expected to follow. That's five years of Klopp on the touchline for the national team — and given what he did at Liverpool, the DFB will take that deal every day of the week.

The opening came fast. Julian Nagelsmann resigned, the German Football Association moved quickly, and Klopp — who has been serving as Red Bull's Head of Global Soccer since January 2025 — emerged as the target. His departure from that role is being treated as a formality, something to be rubber-stamped once the DFB agreement is inked.

What this means for Germany

Germany hosting the Euros in 2024 gave Nagelsmann a genuine platform, and he used it well enough to rebuild some national optimism. But Klopp at 59, with a World Cup cycle ahead, is a different proposition entirely. He's a manager who doesn't just set up a team — he remakes the atmosphere around it. That matters in international football more than people admit.

The 2026 World Cup in North America is the obvious target. A contract to 2030 covers that tournament and takes Germany through to the Euros in that year too. Two major tournaments, potentially three if you count qualifying campaigns. The DFB isn't just hiring a coach — they're buying back into the idea that Germany can be a genuine contender again, not just a respectable participant.

From a betting perspective, Germany's World Cup odds should shift the moment this is confirmed. Klopp has a track record of building belief in squads quickly, and with the talent pool Germany currently has — Wirtz, Musiala, Kimmich — he's not working with raw material. He's inheriting something close to a finished product.

Final negotiations happen in New York this weekend. If it goes to plan, Klopp will be confirmed shortly after.
