Casemiro is in Miami, the drums were banging at Nu Stadium, and the league is watching closely. Inter Miami got their man — but not without leaving a paper trail the MLS is now going through line by line.
The core issue: LA Galaxy held Casemiro's discovery rights, which under MLS rules should have blocked Inter Miami from negotiating with the Brazilian. A settlement between the two clubs eventually cleared the path, but the league launched a tampering investigation anyway. Co-owner Jorge Mas stepped to the mic and went straight at it.
"We entered into no negotiation or conversations with Casemiro or his representatives previous to us talking to the league and talking to the LA Galaxy," Mas said. In other words: we called the right people first. Whether the league agrees is still an open question.
The discovery rights rule is the real story here
Mas didn't just defend Inter Miami — he took a swing at the rule itself. His argument has some logic behind it: discovery rights were designed to stop MLS clubs from bidding against each other. But when you're trying to sign a five-time Champions League winner who left Manchester United and had clubs from multiple continents chasing him, the competition isn't in Kansas City or Seattle. It's global.
"We're actually competing in a global marketplace," Mas said. "There were multiple teams that pursued Casemiro from other leagues, and that's our competition."
That's a fair point — and one MLS will likely have to grapple with as the league keeps pulling in bigger names. The discovery rights system wasn't built for a world where Inter Miami exists.
What Casemiro actually adds to a team that's already winning
The signing isn't just cosmetic. Casemiro has 76 touches in his first MLS appearance — a 1-0 win at Montreal — and the profile fits exactly what Messi-era Inter Miami has been building toward. Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, Luis Suarez, Rodrigo De Paul. This is a club that has consistently brought in players who know how to win at the highest level, not players chasing a sunset paycheck.
Casemiro won three La Liga titles and five Champions Leagues at Real Madrid. He added an FA Cup and League Cup at Old Trafford before departing when his contract expired. At 34, he still played all five of Brazil's matches at the World Cup, scoring once. He's not here to wind down.

Messi hasn't featured since the World Cup and is still in a rest period following Argentina's run to the final, which ended in a 1-0 loss to Spain. When he returns, he'll have Casemiro alongside him.
"He is the god of football," Casemiro said. "I want to enjoy with him and keep winning with him."
The tampering probe could yet complicate things — fines, points deductions, or transfer restrictions aren't off the table if MLS finds a violation. Until that investigation closes, Inter Miami's odds of running away with the Eastern Conference carry a footnote.
