Chris Wilder accused Wrexham of throwing bids at half the Championship. Twenty-four hours later, Phil Parkinson had his man — Wilder's man, specifically — signed on a three-year deal.
Callum O'Hare joins from Sheffield United for an undisclosed fee, completing a move that Wilder had publicly tried to talk down just the day before, claiming the Welsh club were "blanket bombing that position" in the transfer market. Whether or not that's true, the strategy is working. O'Hare is Wrexham's seventh signing of the summer.
Two signings, two problems addressed
O'Hare wasn't the only arrival on Tuesday. Center-back Joe Worrall came in from relegated Burnley on a two-year deal, and his signing is arguably the more urgent one. Wrexham have lost five center-backs this window. Five. Worrall is the first replacement at the position — which explains why Parkinson moved quickly despite the undisclosed fee.
Worrall brings something Wrexham's defence has been badly short of: experience in this division, and a CV that includes promotion from it. "I'm here to win football matches and achieve something special," he said. Given Wrexham are currently 20th in the Championship, that's less a bold claim and more a job requirement.
O'Hare, meanwhile, is the creative addition Parkinson has clearly been targeting. "I want to help the Club go in the right direction and hopefully get what everyone wants — promotion to the Premier League," the winger said. At 28, with genuine Championship pedigree, he fits the profile of a player ready to drive a promotion push rather than develop into one.
The table doesn't lie
The context here matters. Wrexham have drawn both Championship matches so far — 1-1 against Cardiff and 1-1 against Watford — and lost 2-1 at home to Birmingham. They went out of the Carabao Cup to Middlesbrough in the First Round. Seven points behind leaders Charlton Athletic after just a handful of games, the early-season slide is real enough to make these signings feel less like ambition and more like necessity.
Their promotion odds were already looking shaky before a ball was kicked. Adding defensive cover and a winger with Championship quality steadies the picture slightly, but Parkinson needs results fast. Next up: Millwall away on Wednesday, then Swansea on Saturday. Two fixtures that will tell you far more about where this Wrexham side actually is than any transfer announcement can.
Wilder called them out. They signed his best winger anyway.
