Inter Miami are naming a stand after Lionel Messi before he's even retired. The "Leo Messi Stand" at the new Nu Stadium will honour the 38-year-old while he's still lacing up his boots — a break from the usual tradition of posthumous tributes slapped on concrete decades after the fact.
"Traditionally, tributes look to the past," the club said in a statement. "This one is born from the present. From what is happening right now."
Hard to argue with that.
What Messi has actually done in Miami
Since arriving in 2023, Messi has scored 82 goals and registered 53 assists in just 94 appearances — numbers that would be absurd for a player in his prime, let alone one approaching 40. He's already guided the club to three trophies: the Leagues Cup in 2023, the Supporters' Shield in 2024, and the MLS Cup last year.
He also scored his 900th career goal earlier this month, becoming only the second player in elite men's football to reach that mark after Cristiano Ronaldo. A stand feels like the least they could do.
The Nu Stadium opens on April 4 against Austin FC, with a capacity of 26,700. Inter Miami's odds across MLS competitions should reflect a team that now has a permanent home built around its best player — and a fanbase that will pack it every time Messi is on the team sheet.
The living monument question
Naming a stand after a player still in the squad is almost unheard of in professional football. The risk is obvious — what happens if it all ends badly? But Inter Miami are clearly betting on Messi's legacy being untouchable regardless of how his time there concludes.
Given what he's produced in less than two full seasons, that's not a gamble. That's just reading the room. Messi is the all-time leading scorer and assist provider in club history. The stand was inevitable. They just decided not to wait.
