Telecommunications infrastructure giant IHS has officially partnered with the Spires 5-Aside Naija Street Soccer Tournament ahead of the 2026 Lagos State Championship, set to kick off on October 24. Sixteen teams from across Lagos's five divisions will compete. The partnership was unveiled Wednesday in Lagos alongside the Lagos State Sports Commission, whose Director-General Lekan Fatodu showed up in person — which tells you something about how seriously this is now being taken.
From the Streets to a State-Backed Platform
IHS manages over 16,000 mobile towers across Nigeria. That's not a sponsor handing over a cheque for logo placement — that's an outfit with genuine national infrastructure muscle now attached to a grassroots football project. Spires Media PR manager Victor Ottah says IHS will bring "significant innovations" to the tournament, though what that looks like in practice won't be fully clear until September 1, when the next phase of the partnership is unveiled with the Lagos State Football Association.
Fatodu was blunt in his assessment: "It is the most professionally run 5-Aside tournament, not only in Nigeria but across the West African sub-region." Three years of watching before endorsing. That's not a political favour — that's a credibility stamp.
Street football tournaments across West Africa tend to live and die on local sponsorship and word of mouth. The ones that survive long enough to earn state-level recognition are rare. Spires 5-Aside has done it without a title sponsor until now — which makes the IHS partnership feel less like a rescue and more like a reward.
