Huntsville City FC has hired Penn Garvich as managing director of business operations, tasking him with turning the MLS NEXT Pro club's off-pitch momentum into something sustainable.
Garvich arrives from the University of Alabama in Huntsville, where he ran external relations for the Chargers as deputy athletic director. Before that, he managed the title sponsorship for the Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl and spent several years deep in golf administration — running the Korn Ferry Tour's Huntsville Championship and working on the Ryder Cup and PGA Championship. He knows how to make a sports property function as a business, not just a team.
The World Cup timing matters here
Garvich's own words hint at what Huntsville City is actually trying to do right now. "I'm incredibly honored to join Huntsville City FC at such an exciting time as we continue to build off the momentum of the World Cup," he said. That's not throwaway corporate language — North America is hosting the 2026 World Cup, and clubs across MLS and its affiliates are racing to convert the surge in casual interest into actual season-ticket holders and sponsorship revenue.
For a two-year-old club still establishing its identity in north Alabama, that window is short. Getting the business side right while attention is elevated could define the club's next five years. Garvich's background — deepening community ties, driving revenue, managing sponsors — is exactly the profile you hire for that kind of push.
A different kind of sports résumé
What stands out about Garvich isn't just the titles. He served as a field artillery officer in the US Army from 2006 to 2012 with the 101st Airborne Division before pivoting into sports business. That kind of operational background tends to show up in how someone manages complexity and pressure — useful qualities when you're coordinating matchday experience, sponsorships, and community programming simultaneously.
He'll work alongside Nashville SC, the parent club, which gives Huntsville City access to infrastructure most MLS NEXT Pro affiliates don't have. How well Garvich leverages that relationship will matter as much as anything he builds locally.
