Patrick Mahomes has spent his career piling up records on the football field, but away from the Chiefs he and his wife Brittany have been quietly building something just as significant: a growing stake in Kansas City's sporting landscape, with their women's soccer investment now the headline act.
The couple's business ties to the city go back several years. Patrick joined the Kansas City Royals' ownership group in 2020, then expanded into soccer in 2021 by investing in Sporting Kansas City. But it's the Kansas City Current, the NWSL club Brittany co-founded in 2020, that has become the standout success in their portfolio.
Brittany, a former collegiate soccer player at the University of Texas at Tyler, launched the Current before Patrick later joined the ownership group himself, turning it into a shared family project. "We are so thrilled to make this a family affair and have Patrick join as an owner," Brittany said. "He has been a huge supporter behind the scenes. His passion for the Current is undeniable."
From $75 Million to $325 Million
The club's growth has been rapid by any measure. CPKC Stadium, built specifically for the Current and representing an investment of nearly $120 million, opened in March 2024 — a notable milestone for the NWSL as a purpose-built women's soccer venue.
That investment has paid off financially. The Kansas City Current's valuation rose from $75 million in 2024 to $325 million by 2026, and the club now leads the NWSL in annual revenue, generating $36 million a year.
The Mahomeses' sporting interests aren't limited to Kansas City. The couple has also put money into Alpine's Formula One team, broadening their reach well beyond American football and soccer.
A Long-Term Plan Beyond Football
For Patrick, these investments represent more than a financial play — they're a way to stay connected to sport once his playing days are done. Forbes estimated his off-field earnings at $30 million in 2026, a reflection of how much his business ventures have grown alongside his football career.
Speaking after joining Sporting Kansas City's ownership group, Mahomes explained his thinking: "Sporting is a community-oriented club, and I am excited to continue supporting the growth of soccer in Kansas City." He struck a similar note in a 2021 interview, saying, "I want to play for a long time but you can't play forever, but I always want to be involved in sports in some way."
That long-term outlook extends to what comes next for the Current. The club has a planned stadium expansion that would grow CPKC Stadium's capacity from 11,500 to 18,000 seats, with retail and infrastructure development also planned nearby — projects that could keep the Mahomes family's imprint on Kansas City's sports scene growing for years to come.
