A 10th-division non-league club in Greater Manchester has officially clarified that Jadon Sancho is not signing for them. Which is a sentence that probably shouldn't need to exist — and yet here we are.
Sancho, released by Manchester United on July 1, has been training independently to stay sharp while his next move materialises. He chose Flixton FC's facilities for a private session, praised their pitch in a video that made the rounds online, and suddenly the internet decided he might be heading to the tenth tier of English football. What Flixton actually said
To their credit, the club handled it well. Owner Christopher Garcia confirmed Sancho "was not on trial with the club and was not involved in any transfer discussions," adding that he "simply used our facilities for a private training session to maintain his fitness while preparing for the next chapter of his career."
Garcia also pushed back on criticism that has followed Sancho online: "Jadon is a world-class footballer who has achieved more in the game than most players could ever dream of. He deserves respect for both his accomplishments and the way he conducted himself during his visit, not the unwarranted criticism that has followed."
By all accounts, Sancho was professional, signed autographs for young fans, and left the place on good terms. The club's assistant manager, Rhodri Giggs — brother of Ryan — was presumably around to appreciate the surreal nature of the whole thing.
The real story: where does Sancho actually go?
The humor of the situation shouldn't completely overshadow the genuine concern here. Sancho is 26, technically in his prime years, and has been without a club since the start of July. His £73 million move from Borussia Dortmund never worked out — 12 goals in 83 appearances across five years at Old Trafford tells the story clearly enough. Loan spells at Dortmund and Chelsea followed, then a season at Aston Villa.
Right now, Qatari club Al-Rayyan is among the few sides to register serious interest. Sancho is reportedly open to the Middle East — the Saudi Pro League is also an option — or staying in Europe if the right offer materialises. Any top European club shopping for a winger this window isn't exactly racing to the phone.
The longer this drags on, the more his market value and leverage erode. Flixton's doors remain open. Hopefully, for everyone's sake, he won't need them.
