Sebastián Beccacece has named his 26-man Ecuador squad for the 2026 World Cup, and it's a roster that mixes genuine European pedigree with a couple of sentimental picks — exactly what you'd expect from a coach who knows this tournament could define his tenure.
Moisés Caicedo headlines it. The Chelsea midfielder is Ecuador's most valuable asset in every sense, and Beccacece's system will almost certainly be built around him. But the squad has real depth beyond the obvious names.
Europe-based core gives Ecuador genuine firepower
William Pacho at Paris Saint-Germain. Piero Hincapié now at Arsenal. Pervis Estupiñán at AC Milan. Kendry Páez at River Plate. This isn't a collection of journeymen — Ecuador have players operating at the top end of club football, and it shows in how Beccacece can set up defensively and through midfield.
Enner Valencia remains the fulcrum up front. Ecuador's all-time leading scorer is still at it with Pachuca in Liga MX, and while he's no longer the explosive version of himself from 2014, his movement and finishing hold value as a focal point. Anyone building World Cup outright or top scorer markets around Ecuador starts with Valencia as the reference point.
The Liga MX presence doesn't stop with Valencia. Pedro Vite of Pumas UNAM is in, as is Club Tijuana defender Jackson Porozo. Jordy Caicedo is an interesting case — technically under contract with Atlas but currently on loan at Huracán in Argentina. He's in the squad regardless.
Group stage: Ecuador's path is steep from the jump
They've already dropped points. A 1-0 defeat to Ivory Coast on June 15 is the kind of opening result that forces you to win your next two just to feel comfortable. Curaçao on June 20 should be manageable, but Germany on June 25 will tell you everything about whether this side is built for the knockout rounds or just making up the numbers.
- June 15: Ivory Coast 1-0 Ecuador
- June 20: Curaçao vs Ecuador (8 p.m.)
- June 25: Germany vs Ecuador (4 p.m.)
The Ecuador Football Federation revealed the squad through a video paying tribute to Ecuadorians who have been forced to leave their country — an emotional framing that landed with the fanbase. The squad itself, though, will be judged on what happens against Germany.
