"I'm not crying over a decision you can't change" — that's Cole Palmer's response to being left out of England's World Cup squad, and honestly, it's the only quote that matters here.

Thomas Tuchel dropped the Chelsea playmaker from his 26-man roster despite Palmer scoring a pivotal equalizer in the Euro 2024 final less than 12 months ago. That's the kind of moment that defines careers. And yet, here we are.

Tuchel's reasoning is hard to argue with

Tuchel was blunt when explaining the call: Palmer "was not as decisive or as influential" as in previous seasons, his record in England camps "was not outstanding," and injury kept pulling him out of the picture at the worst times. That's three separate reasons, none of them harsh — just honest.

This season at Chelsea has been Palmer's toughest since his move from Manchester City. The managerial carousel at Stamford Bridge didn't help anyone, but Palmer's output dropped noticeably, and international squads don't reward potential — they reward form. At 24, with the tournament coming now, the timing just didn't work in his favour.

He joins a notable list of absentees alongside Harry Maguire, Phil Foden, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Morgan Gibbs-White. England's tournament odds won't collapse without him, but the depth of attacking creativity Tuchel has sacrificed is real — and Palmer specifically is the kind of player who changes games in the 70th minute when they're level.

What comes next matters more

Palmer says he'll spend the summer resting — his first proper break in three or four years — before returning to Chelsea for pre-season under incoming manager Xabi Alonso. That reset could be exactly what he needs. A full pre-season, a fresh manager, and a point to prove heading into 2025-26.

Whether he'll watch England's games? "If I'm not doing anything, then I'll watch the matches, yeah." Not exactly glued to the screen. Can't blame him.
