The Caribbean Football Union (CFU) has announced it will vote unanimously for Gianni Infantino in FIFA's upcoming presidential election. The CFU has 31 member associations, of which 25 are eligible to vote, and its decision puts it at odds with the position of its continental umbrella organization, CONCACAF, which has opposed Infantino.
The CFU said the unified stance followed consultations with all its members and cited FIFA's financial support for the development of football in the region as the reason behind the endorsement. The federation added a caveat to its support, stating: "In this regard, the CFU continues to call for greater transparency, responsible leadership, and fundamental reforms within the soccer community."
Infantino is seeking a fourth term as FIFA president at the organization's Congress on March 18, 2027, in Rabat. Support for the 56-year-old has grown considerably in recent weeks. Asian Football Confederation president Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim al-Chalifa has assured Infantino of his "unreserved support," and Infantino is also said to be able to count on a large number of votes from Africa, South America, and Oceania.
Candidates have until November 18 to submit their applications for the presidential election to FIFA. Kozo Tashima, honorary president of the Japanese Football Association, has announced his intention to challenge Infantino for the role, while Ramon Vega is also seeking the nomination. Neither is considered to have much chance of success.
It remains unclear whether UEFA, Infantino's fiercest rival among the continental confederations, will be able to field a candidate of its own to challenge him.
