Twelve months ago, Leipzig's staff were telling anyone who'd listen that Yan Diomande would be worth €100 million within a couple of years. That sounded like club PR talking. It wasn't.
The 19-year-old Ivorian winger just finished his debut Bundesliga season with 12 goals, eight assists, a Rookie of the Season trophy, and a Champions League qualification to his name. Real Madrid have now entered the race for his signature this summer, with PSG still firmly in the picture. Leipzig's asking price is €100 million. Nobody's laughing at that figure anymore.
From Florida semi-pro to Europe's most wanted — in under two years
The backstory almost doesn't seem real. Diomande was bouncing around a Florida youth academy and the semi-professional United Premier Soccer League before landing at Leganés' second team in Spain's second division in late 2024. Premier League and Scottish Premiership trials had gone nowhere. Agents had passed on representing him. MLS clubs hadn't even noticed him.
Leipzig's data scouts noticed. Their internal recommendation, reportedly, was blunt: sign him now. Leganés had a €20 million release clause in his contract. Leipzig paid it without negotiating.
That looks like one of the transfers of the decade in hindsight.
He broke into the mainstream in October with a goal and two assists in a 6-0 demolition of Augsburg, then barely let up. A dominant week against Stuttgart. A hat-trick in another 6-0 win, this time over Eintracht Frankfurt — Bild gave him a Note 1, their perfect match rating. By the winter break, every major European club was already circling. Leipzig shut down all January enquiries at €100 million. Everyone backed off and waited for summer.
What actually makes him dangerous
The goal and assist numbers are fine, but they don't capture what defenders actually face. Diomande is genuinely two-footed — he can go either way on you, and it's not a preference thing, it's a genuine threat in both directions. He can score with precision or brute power. He can work his way through a defence or simply run through it.
He was clocked as the fifth-fastest player in the Bundesliga this season. What separates him from other quick wingers is his acceleration from a standstill — the ability to go from nothing to full speed in a few strides. That's the part that's almost impossible to defend against in a one-on-one.

Leipzig's sporting director Marcel Schaefer admitted there was no real negotiation when they signed him — they either paid the clause or watched him go elsewhere. They paid. Now they're in the position of setting the price, and the clubs chasing Diomande are the ones without leverage.
Real Madrid and PSG both want him. One of them is going to pay €100 million for a 19-year-old who, two years ago, couldn't get a trial in Scotland. Leipzig's scouts will rightly feel vindicated. The clubs that missed him probably won't want to think about it too hard.
