Xabi Alonso Lauds Mike Penders After Goalkeeper's Redemption Against Manchester United.

Mike Penders has gone through a turbulent week in goal for Chelsea, and manager Xabi Alonso praised the 21-year-old after his crucial late save helped secure a clean sheet against Manchester United.

Penders stepped into the Chelsea starting lineup after Emiliano Martínez left the win at Everton on October 17 with a fractured jaw. His first full Premier League appearance came against Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge, where he was among the Blues' standout performers until he punched a corner into his own net in the second half, a mistake that proved pivotal as Spurs went on to win 2-0 in SW6.

Speaking after that game, via football.london, Alonso backed his young goalkeeper: "We win, we lose together and it is part of my job with and to overcome from mistakes, myself as well and everyone, so we support Mike and we support the rest of the team. He will learn from that and we will want to prove that he can do better and we have to show that we can do better."

Penders responded with a strong performance in the Carabao Cup trip to Anfield, making a notable save to deny Bradley Barcola's edge-of-the-box effort and later saving Ryan Gravenberch's spot kick during the penalty shootout. Chelsea still lost the shootout after Emmanuel Emegha's attempt was saved by Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Returning to Stamford Bridge for Saturday's Premier League meeting with Manchester United, Penders made two sharp stops before producing the moment of the match, getting the faintest of touches to divert Bryan Mbeumo's powerful long-range effort onto the crossbar in the closing stages.

Alonso praised the goalkeeper's response after full time: "Not just today, I think that in Liverpool he was really solid, he had a very good performance, very stable for a 'keeper and today he has shown a good level. Another clean sheet, the second one in three games and we need to keep going. Mike has overcome the difficult moment that we got here last Saturday and this is part of the development of a goalkeeper, of any player."

With Martínez still sidelined after jaw surgery, no official return timeline has been provided, though sources close to the club suggest the Argentine goalkeeper could return sooner than originally anticipated, albeit wearing a protective mask. Given Penders' recent form, the report adds that Chelsea have no pressing need to rush Martínez back and could allow his recovery to proceed at its own pace.
