Big news from FIFA headquarters. President Gianni Infantino just confirmed that Iran will definitely be playing at the 2026 World Cup in North America. He got personal assurances directly from US President Donald Trump.

The tournament kicks off on June 11 and runs through July 19. It's being co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Iran's group stage wraps up with a match against Egypt in Seattle on June 26.

This confirmation is huge because there was real uncertainty about Iran's participation. Iranian officials had recently suggested the team might not be able to compete due to the current conflict situation. Some fans were already wondering if they should hold off on any early tournament bets involving Iran.

Trump and FIFA's Close Relationship

Infantino and Trump have quite the connection. Trump even received FIFA's inaugural peace prize, an award many believe was specifically created with him in mind. During their recent discussions, Trump made it crystal clear that Iran's team is welcome to compete.

"We all need an event like the FIFA World Cup to bring people together now more than ever," Infantino said. He thanked Trump for his support, which is significant given that Iran fans were previously banned from entering the US under earlier travel restrictions.

FIFA's World Cup chief operating officer, Heimo Schirgi, also weighed in earlier this week. He said the tournament is simply "too big" to postpone because of the current turmoil involving the US and Israeli war against Iran. FIFA is monitoring the situation daily, but they're confident the show will go on.

Concerns Remain Despite Assurances

The uncertainty wasn't just political posturing. Iran's football federation president Mehdi Taj told media in early March that it's "hard to look at the World Cup with hope" after recent attacks. That statement sent shockwaves through the football community.

There are also serious safety concerns for Iranian players. Australia recently granted six humanitarian visas to members of Iran's women's national team. Home affairs minister Tony Burke confirmed seven people were offered asylum, though one woman changed her mind and returned home.

The remaining Iran players left Australia on Tuesday after their team was eliminated from the AFC Asian Cup. It's a reminder that the situation remains fluid and potentially dangerous for Iranian athletes.

For bettors looking at Group stage outcomes, this confirmation removes a major variable. Iran's participation is now guaranteed, so you can confidently include them in your tournament predictions and head-to-head matchups. Their clash with Egypt in Seattle should draw significant betting interest given all the drama surrounding their participation.
