Thomas Müller is 36, playing in MLS, winning shooting challenges at All-Star week, and no longer married. That's a sentence nobody was writing two years ago.
The German arrived at Vancouver Whitecaps in August 2025 after calling time on more than two decades at Bayern Munich. In July 2026, he was named a coach's pick for the MLS All-Star Game in Charlotte, North Carolina — and before the main event, he won the All-Star Shooting Challenge. A new league, a new country, and he's already making himself at home.
The separation that nobody saw coming
Off the pitch, 2026 has been far heavier. Müller and his wife Lisa confirmed their separation on June 3, with their joint lawyer Christian Schertz delivering the news. They married in 2009, had been together for roughly two decades, and shared a life built around horses, their Bavarian home, and football. No children. No dramatic falling-out, at least not publicly — their statement called it amicable and asked for privacy.
The geography now tells its own story. Thomas is in Canada. Lisa has stayed in Bavaria, continuing her dressage career and her work at Gut Wettlkam. At a Bavarian State Parliament summer reception in July, she was already being asked what she'd look for in a future partner — humor, charm, character, reportedly. Life moves fast.
For Müller, the clean break from Germany is now total. No Bayern shirt, no Bavaria, no Lisa. Just the Whitecaps, the Pacific Northwest, and whatever this next chapter turns out to be.
Roots that run deep
To understand where Müller comes from, you go back to Pähl — a small Bavarian village where he was born on September 13, 1989, raised by his parents Gerhard and Klaudia, and kicked a ball around for TSV Pähl from the age of four. Bayern came calling when he was 10 and never really let go until he chose to leave himself.
He has one sibling, a younger brother named Simon. In 2011, the two faced each other in a friendly for TSV Pähl to raise money for a sports hall in their hometown. It's the kind of detail that doesn't fit neatly into the Bundesliga trophy cabinet, but it says something about what kind of family produced him.
Müller is now a Vancouver Whitecap, an MLS All-Star, and officially single. At this stage of his career, the football is almost the straightforward part.
