Erling Haaland didn't become the most clinical striker in world football by accident. One look at his family tree tells you most of what you need to know.

Born in Leeds in July 2000, Haaland grew up in a household where elite sport was the baseline, not the aspiration. His father, Alf-Inge Haaland, was a professional footballer who turned out for Nottingham Forest, Leeds United, and Manchester City. His mother, Gry Marita Braut, was one of Norway's top heptathletes in the 1990s — a discipline that demands explosive speed, power, and endurance across seven events. Erling has openly credited her for the physical attributes that make him so difficult to contain. The pace, the athleticism — he says that's all her.

A father who wanted a golfer, not a footballer

The most revealing detail about Alf-Inge Haaland isn't his playing career — it's what he wanted for his son. "His biggest dream was me becoming a professional golfer," Erling said on The Rest is Football podcast. For a man who played professionally in England, that's a striking choice. Whether that skepticism was protection or genuine preference, it clearly didn't take.

Following his divorce from Erling's mother, Alf-Inge remarried and has two younger daughters, meaning Erling has two half-sisters in addition to his full siblings.

In Norway, surnames carry both parental lines — which is why "Braut Haaland" appears on the back of his jersey rather than just Haaland. Both parents, both legacies. Fitting for someone who seems to have inherited the best of each.

Gabrielle, Astor and life outside the spotlight

His sister Gabrielle, born in January 1998, has built a following of over 300,000 on Instagram and is a regular fixture in the stands at Norway's matches. She married Norwegian businessman and former footballer Jan Gunnar Eide in 2020, and the couple have two children. The family resemblance is obvious — same striking blonde hair, though she's considerably shorter than her 6'4" brother.

Brother Astor went a different direction entirely. No football career, no social media presence to speak of — he studied finance at BI Norwegian Business School and keeps his distance from the spotlight his brother commands every weekend.

  • Alf-Inge Haaland — former professional footballer (Nottingham Forest, Leeds United, Manchester City); wanted Erling to become a professional golfer
  • Gry Marita Braut — former elite heptathlete; credited by Erling for his pace and athleticism
  • Gabrielle Haaland — social media personality with 300k+ Instagram followers; married with two children
  • Astor Haaland — studied finance at BI Norwegian Business School; largely private

Haaland is 25, already a Premier League champion, and now part of a Norway side that reached the 2026 World Cup quarter-finals. The genetics were always going to point somewhere interesting. Turns out, they pointed here.
