Luis de la Fuente will stay on as Spain's head coach through 2032 after the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced a four-year extension to his contract. RFEF president Rafael Louzán confirmed the news at the World Football Summit, with the new deal replacing an existing contract that had been due to run out after Euro 2028.
The federation says the agreement also comes with a significant salary increase, which will make De la Fuente one of the highest-paid national team coaches in the world. His previous contract had only been signed in January 2025, but both Louzán and De la Fuente had reportedly wanted to extend their partnership further given his run of results.
"His results speak for themselves, as does his work," Louzán said. "The public loves and admires him. I offered him an extension because he wasn't among the top 10 in terms of financial conditions. Now he will be. We're finalizing the agreement so he can remain for several more years. He's been with us for 14 years, and I want him to be able to finish his career here."
According to the federation, Louzán and De la Fuente agreed after Spain's World Cup triumph to revisit the contract situation over the summer, and that discussion has now produced the extension.
A Deal That Runs to the 2030 World Cup
The timing of the new contract is notable given that 2032 is the year after Spain is scheduled to serve as the primary host of the World Cup. Speaking to AS after the World Cup, De la Fuente reflected on the idea of leading the team into that tournament, though he was careful to keep his focus elsewhere for now.
"I hope I can experience this again four years from now, because this edition has been unique -- the happiness, the experience and then being able to enjoy a success like this alongside an entire country," he said. "As for thinking about the 2030 World Cup, I'm very much focused on the short term. We're looking at what's ahead in September. That's what matters most to us. We're only thinking about the next competition."
The extension was announced just two days before De la Fuente is set to name Spain's first squad for the Nations League. The squad is due to report for duty in Las Rozas on Tuesday, September 22, with four matches lined up during the international break.
The Most Decorated Coach in Spanish History
In less than four years in charge, De la Fuente has become the most decorated coach the national team has ever had. He has won a World Cup, matching Vicente del Bosque, one of his own reference points, a European Championship, joining Aragonés, Villalonga and Del Bosque as winners of that trophy, and a Nations League title, the achievement that first put him on this run of success. That combination of World Cup and European Championship wins puts him in a small group alongside Del Bosque and Helmut Schön.
Before taking charge of the senior side, De la Fuente had already built a strong record within the federation, winning the UEFA European Under-19 Championship in 2015 and the Under-21 Championship in 2019, as well as the Mediterranean Games in 2018 and a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics.
