Peter Shalulile is leaving Mamelodi Sundowns. Six years, 68 league goals, a broken PSL all-time scoring record, and two CAF Champions League titles — and now he's gone, squeezed out by a roster that simply ran out of room for him.
The Namibia international, 32, came close to leaving twelve months ago when North African clubs came sniffing. He stayed, fought for his place, and watched the minutes dry up anyway under Miguel Cardoso. Iqraam Rayners, Brayan León, and Lebo Mothiba all moved ahead of him in the queue. Eventually, the writing on the wall became impossible to ignore.
What those numbers actually mean
68 South African Premiership goals for one club is a number that reframes the conversation about where Shalulile sits in PSL history. He broke Siyabonga Nomvethe's all-time record last season — a mark that had stood for years and felt untouchable. Then there's the continental side: 20 CAF Champions League goals in 55 appearances, including two in five during Sundowns' 2025-26 title run. All of those came in a Sundowns shirt.
That Champions League record is arguably the more telling one. Performing consistently at continental level, over multiple campaigns, against the best defenses on the continent — that's not a flat-track stat. It's a legitimate legacy.
The way he went out says something too
Cardoso called him "one of the examples inside the club" at the start of this season. Vice-captain Ronwen Williams described a player who arrives two hours early, does finishing sessions in the afternoon, watches clips of Ronaldo at night, and never sulks when he's dropped. "He doesn't change his core values when things are not going his way," Williams told ESPN.
That kind of professionalism doesn't always get rewarded with minutes. At Sundowns, with the depth they carry, it didn't. But it did earn him a clean exit and genuine respect from the dressing room — which, in football, is rarer than it sounds.
Where Shalulile lands next is the open question. At 32, with that record and that workrate, he won't be short of options. Sundowns, meanwhile, move on with their title defence intact — but the PSL's all-time top scorer is no longer in their squad.
