Cristiano Ronaldo didn't say a word. He didn't have to. A single Instagram like from the Portuguese superstar has reignited one of the World Cup's most heated conspiracy theories — that FIFA engineered Argentina's path to glory for the sake of Lionel Messi's legacy.
The post in question came from Spanish journalist Pilar Rodriguez Losantos, who compiled a video alleging that Argentina benefited from manipulated refereeing decisions and VAR interventions throughout the tournament. Ronaldo hit like. The internet did the rest.
What the conspiracy actually claims
Losantos didn't mince words in her video: "Argentina should have been eliminated at least five matches ago! They're still in the tournament thanks to FIFA's help! So I'm not afraid of Argentina at all. I'm more afraid of Infantino."
That's a direct accusation against FIFA president Gianni Infantino, and it's the kind of claim that would ordinarily be dismissed as fringe noise — except the volume of people making similar arguments made it impossible to ignore.
The most cited incident involves Argentina's Round of 16 match against Egypt. Egypt thought they'd doubled their lead, only for VAR to rule out the goal for a foul committed roughly 20 seconds prior. Egypt's penalty appeal later in the same game was waved away. Argentina scored the winner. Fans who already had doubts didn't need much more than that.
Circulating statistics added more fuel — Argentina reportedly committed a high number of fouls while collecting comparatively few yellow cards, and their VAR record across the tournament looked suspiciously clean next to other sides. These figures have been shared widely online, though they haven't been independently verified in a controlled breakdown.
FIFA's response
Refereeing chief Pierluigi Collina pushed back firmly. "Nobody can question the integrity of the FIFA World Cup match officials," he said. "Nobody can claim that FIFA refereeing can be influenced by anyone, not even by the FIFA president."
Strong words. Whether they do anything to shift opinion among fans who spent the tournament watching incidents pile up is another matter entirely.
Ronaldo liking that post changes nothing factually. But it hands the conspiracy theory a famous face, and in the social media economy, that's often all a story needs to keep breathing.
