Pochettino Takes Odd Shot at Weah Over World Cup Ticket Comments.

Mauricio Pochettino just stepped into an unnecessary controversy. The USMNT manager made some eyebrow-raising comments last week that have people talking for all the wrong reasons.

It all started when Tim Weah spoke to a French newspaper about the 2026 World Cup. The 25-year-old winger, who already has 47 caps for the United States, didn't say anything outrageous. He simply pointed out that ticket prices are too high and real fans might get priced out.

"I am just a bit disappointed by the ticket prices," Weah told Le Dauphiné Libéré. "Lots of real fans will miss matches. It is too expensive. Football should still be enjoyed by everyone."

Seems pretty reasonable, right? Pochettino didn't think so.

The Manager's Response Misses the Mark

During a press conference, Pochettino fired back at his own player. "I think players need to talk on the pitch, playing football, not outside," the Argentine manager said. "It is not his duty to evaluate the price of the ticket. We are not politicians."

Here's the thing - Weah wasn't talking politics. He was talking about soccer fans being able to afford tickets to watch soccer. That's directly related to his job, not some political hot take.

The USMNT has actually been encouraged to speak up on issues in recent years. The whole "stick to sports" angle feels outdated, especially when players are just commenting on fan accessibility.

Then Pochettino made things worse by defending FIFA's decisions. He praised the organization for "doing an amazing job around the world uniting people." This sounds tone-deaf when you consider parking at some World Cup venues will cost up to $300.

Why This Matters for the USMNT

The timing couldn't be worse. The World Cup kicks off this summer on home soil, and the team needs unity. Having the manager publicly criticize a key player over something this minor creates unnecessary tension.

Weah has been thoughtful when politics actually come up. He handled an awkward White House visit last year with grace, saying he just wants to focus on football. The irony? Both Weah and Pochettino seem to agree players should stay out of politics.

For bettors watching the USMNT, team chemistry matters. Any friction between coach and players could impact performance when the stakes are highest. The U.S. faces pressure to perform well as co-hosts, and distractions like this don't help.

Pochettino has generally been great since taking the job. But this response misread both the player and the moment. Weah wasn't stirring up controversy - he was showing he cares about the fans who support him.
