Houston Dynamo defender Lucas Halter has broken MLS's single-season goals record, scoring against Seattle Sounders on Wednesday night for what was the 1,553rd goal of the 2026 regular season. That tally surpassed the previous mark of 1,552, set in 2024, with two full matchdays, 30 games in total, still to be played.
By the end of play on Matchday 33 that same Wednesday, the league had recorded 1,559 goals across 480 games, working out to an average of 3.25 goals per game.
MLS keeping pace with the Bundesliga
According to statistics collected by eScored.com, that 3.25 average for MLS in 2026 narrowly exceeds the German Bundesliga's 2025/26 figure of 3.24 goals per game. The two leagues sit well clear of the rest: Ligue 1 (2.82) comes in ahead of the Premier League (2.75) and LaLiga (2.69), while Serie A trails at 2.43 goals per game, having reportedly reverted to lower-scoring form after a previous goalscoring uptick.
A longer-term look paints a more modest picture
A separate study by TheDatabetics, covering 38,456 matches across 29 professional leagues between 2022 and 2026, ranks MLS sixth overall with an average of 2.96 goals per game over that period. It sits behind the top-ranked leagues in Germany (3.19), the Netherlands (3.12), Norway (3.09), Switzerland (3.02) and China (2.97).
The gap between that four-year average of 2.96 and this season's 3.25 figure points to a trend toward more attacking play across MLS, though it could also reflect weaker defending league-wide.
With 30 games still to play, MLS is on course to finish the season with 1,656 goals, more than 100 above the previous record for a 34-game campaign.
