Mbappé had been in Cagliari, Italy, spending a few days off with actress Ester Expósito. The trip was authorized. Nobody is claiming he broke any rules. But returning from a sun-soaked Italian getaway twelve minutes before your club kicks off — while you're injured and the season is unraveling — is the kind of image that sticks.
The injury backdrop makes it worse
Mbappé pulled up with a left hamstring injury late in the Real Madrid vs. Real Betis match, asking to come off around the 80th minute. Tests confirmed the problem. The club set a target: get him fit for the Clásico. That plan hasn't changed.
But Madrid's season has effectively collapsed around him. Silverware is gone. The mood inside the club is tense. And while nobody expects an injured player to sit in a dark room until he recovers, the timing of these photos — published, shared, and widely mocked within hours — has added friction to an already fragile atmosphere.
