Casemiro is already saying his goodbyes at Carrington — handing out gifts to staff, preparing a farewell to the Old Trafford crowd on Sunday — but there's a pointed truth buried in his exit: if Michael Carrick had walked through the door sooner, he might not be leaving at all.

The Brazilian told the Sun he believes he'd have stayed at United for another year had Carrick been appointed earlier than January. That's not a throwaway line. It's a quiet indictment of how the club was managed before the Englishman arrived.

What Carrick actually changed

Under Carrick, Casemiro has looked like a different player. Four consecutive 90-minute appearances — the first time all season he'd managed that — tells you everything about how the squad was being handled before. A 34-year-old midfielder doesn't suddenly rediscover his legs. He gets managed properly, and Carrick did that.

The contrast with what came before is damning. United burned through one of their most experienced midfielders in a season when getting the best out of him should have been the baseline priority. Now he's heading to Inter Miami and MLS this summer, with the deal reportedly close to done.

Casemiro joined from Real Madrid in 2022 and, at his best, brought a defensive midfield presence United had lacked for years. His time at Old Trafford has been patchy — injury, inconsistency, the general chaos of a club still finding its footing — but the final stretch under Carrick has shown what he can still offer at the top level.

What United do next

The Red Devils are already searching for a replacement, which is the right call. Casemiro's departure creates a gap that won't be filled by someone of similar profile easily or cheaply — and any midfielder coming in will need to hit the ground running if United want to compete in the top four race next season. Their midfield odds for 2025-26 look shakier the longer this search drags on.

He'll get his farewell on Sunday against Nottingham Forest. Then the gifts are given, the handshakes are done, and United are left figuring out what a better-managed situation might have prevented.
