Here's something you never thought you'd see - German football fans are actually planning to cheer for England at the World Cup. Wild, right?

The reason? They want to see their countryman Thomas Tuchel lift the trophy. Even if it means supporting their old rivals.

This unexpected alliance came to light at a reception hosted by Germany's ambassador to the UK in London. The buzz around England's World Cup chances is real, and now they've got unexpected backup from across the North Sea.

One German broadcaster put it simply: "If Germany can't win, we want England to do it. After all, we love the same things - beer, football, and darts. And you've got a German manager."

Tuchel's Rocky Start with English Fans

It hasn't all been smooth sailing for Tuchel. When he was appointed two years ago, he actually apologized for holding a German passport. That's how sensitive the situation was.

Things got tense after he criticized England fans for being too quiet during a 3-0 friendly win over Wales. The supporters hit back brilliantly at the next match against Latvia, chanting: "We'll sing when we want, Thomas Tuchel, we'll sing when we want."

To his credit, Tuchel loved it. He praised the fans' sense of humor and called their support "brilliant from start to finish."

Perfect Qualifying Record Boosts England's Odds

Whatever the drama, Tuchel's delivered results. England absolutely dominated their World Cup qualifying group, winning all eight matches and finishing 10 points clear without conceding a single goal.

That kind of form has serious implications for England's tournament odds. The FA was so impressed they extended Tuchel's contract from the World Cup's end through 2028.

Some Germans are already joking that the only way England could end 60 years of hurt was by putting a German in charge. But whether it's genuine support or friendly banter, England will have a massive following this summer.

As one German diplomat said: "Let's face it, if Germany can't win, we might as well have a German manager lift the World Cup."
