Elye Wahi won't be in Toronto. The Nice forward has been denied entry into Canada by border authorities, ruling him out of Ivory Coast's World Cup group stage match against Germany — and the reason is about as serious as football scandals get.

Wahi was arrested and questioned by French authorities on May 29 in connection with a suspected match manipulation investigation. The case centres on a Ligue 1 fixture on May 17 against Metz, where he is alleged to have deliberately earned a yellow card. Investigators are also looking at possible links to betting activity. He was released, but the investigation is still open — and that open case is precisely why Canadian authorities wouldn't let him cross the border.

Ivory Coast left in the dark

The Ivorian Football Federation says it has not been officially notified of any judicial or administrative proceedings against the player. That's a notable detail. Their statement offers full support to Wahi and calls him "an important member" of the squad, but the facts on the ground are what they are: he's sitting in the United States while his teammates prepare for one of the tournament's more difficult group fixtures.

Facing Germany without a key attacking option changes Ivory Coast's outlook considerably. Their attacking depth was already a question mark at this level, and anyone who had backed Les Éléphants to threaten in this match should be reassessing that position now.

The bigger problem isn't the travel ban

The Canada entry issue is temporary. The investigation isn't. If French authorities pursue the case further, Wahi faces consequences that extend well beyond one missed World Cup match — potentially including a ban from professional football altogether, depending on what prosecutors find.

Match manipulation investigations rarely resolve quickly, and they rarely resolve quietly. Wahi is 22 years old and was building real momentum at Nice. The timing, for him personally and for Ivory Coast at this tournament, could hardly be worse.

The FIF says it will "communicate any official updates as necessary." There may be quite a few to come.
