Sebastián Beccacece has named his 26-man Ecuador squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and it's the most European-flavored group the country has ever assembled. Chelsea's Moisés Caicedo headlines the list, but the depth behind him is what makes this squad genuinely interesting.

PSG's William Pacho, Arsenal's Piero Hincapié, AC Milan's Pervis Estupiñán — Ecuador's defensive line reads like a Champions League team sheet. That's not hyperbole. Those three clubs combined spent north of €100 million to acquire those players. If Ecuador can keep opponents out, their defensive market value alone should have bookmakers paying attention.

Valencia is still the man up front

For all the European star power, Ecuador still leans on Enner Valencia to lead the line. The Pachuca striker is the country's all-time leading scorer, and at 35 he's not here to make up the numbers. He's the reference point the attack is built around.

Kendry Páez of River Plate adds creativity in midfield — one of the most exciting young talents in South American football right now. Gonzalo Plata at Flamengo brings pace and directness from the flanks. Ecuador aren't short of attacking options; the question is whether Beccacece can find a system that gets the best from all of them simultaneously.

The squad announcement itself was something different. The Ecuadorian Football Federation unveiled the roster via a social media video that paid tribute to Ecuadorians forced to leave their homeland over the years. Fitting, in a way — nearly the entire squad plays abroad.

Group E sets up a winnable path

Ecuador land in Group E with Germany, Ivory Coast, and Curaçao. Germany are the obvious favorites to top the group, but second place is Ecuador's to lose. They open against Ivory Coast on June 14 — a game that will define the tournament's trajectory for both sides.

Ivory Coast have genuine quality but have been inconsistent in major tournaments. Ecuador, with this defensive unit, are not the side to take lightly. That opener could go either way, and the odds should reflect how evenly matched these two actually are.
