Brentford have confirmed they reported an unusual incident that occurred during Saturday's Premier League match against Liverpool to the authorities. The Bees fell to a 2-1 defeat at the Gtech Community Stadium, with Víctor Muñoz and Alexander Isak proving decisive in the second half after Keane Lewis-Potter had given Brentford the lead in the 44th minute.
Video footage circulating on social media appears to show a male launching a rugby ball from a balcony overlooking the stadium during the game, with the object landing on the pitch below. A separate clip shows an individual carrying a rugby ball away from the playing surface, accompanied by a caption reading "Wrong sport mate," according to The Mirror.
Brentford confirmed the incident has been referred to the police given its "dangerous and potentially harmful" nature. A club statement issued on Monday read: "Brentford Football Club is aware of an incident involving an item being kicked from a height towards the field of play during Saturday's match against Liverpool. Such behaviour is dangerous and potentially very harmful."
The statement continued: "The matter has been referred to the police and the club is supporting the relevant authorities in their investigation to help identify those responsible and take appropriate action, which may result in criminal prosecution. The matchday safety of fans, staff, players and officials is of utmost importance, and the club will support all efforts to ensure action is taken."
Brentford have enjoyed a largely encouraging start to the campaign, currently sitting sixth in the Premier League table with two wins, four draws and one defeat from their opening fixtures. The Bees' next assignment is an away fixture at Hull City on Sunday, October 25.
Liverpool occupy fifth place, one spot above Brentford, having registered three wins and three draws from their opening seven matches of the season. The Reds face Villarreal in the Champions League on Tuesday, October 20, before hosting third-placed Brighton and Hove Albion at Anfield the following Sunday.
Liverpool are also dealing with several injury absences. Hugo Ekitike remains out following an Achilles tendon rupture suffered late last season, while both Conor Bradley and Gio Leoni continue their rehabilitation from separate knee problems.
