"Football has given me both the best moments, the sad moments," Cristo Fernández told ESPN back in May. "I guess that's why, for me, football is life." On Saturday night, wearing No. 91 for El Paso Locomotive, he got another chapter of both.

Fernández — best known as the endlessly enthusiastic Dani Rojas in Ted Lasso — came on as a substitute in the 79th minute of El Paso's USL Cup match against New Mexico United. He picked up a yellow card. El Paso lost 2-0. Not exactly a fairytale debut, but a professional debut nonetheless.

The road back was longer than a cameo

This wasn't a celebrity stunt. Fernández was a legitimate prospect growing up in Mexico, spending time in the youth setup at Liga MX side Tecos before injuries through his early 20s ended that path before it properly started. Acting filled the void — and filled it well, given Ted Lasso's global reach.

But the football itch never went away. He spent last year working with a performance coach and physical therapist, running a soccer clinic back in Mexico to test where his body was. A trial with Chicago Fire's reserve side followed early in 2026. Then a trial with El Paso. Then a contract.

That's not a celebrity getting handed a shirt for PR purposes. That's someone grinding through a legitimate pathway back into the sport at a level where results still matter.

What this means for El Paso

For Locomotive, the signing is obviously not without its off-pitch benefits — Fernández's profile brings eyeballs to a USL side that wouldn't otherwise attract international attention. But a 2-0 home loss to New Mexico United is a rough backdrop for the feelgood story, and El Paso will need more than a famous face if they want to go deep in the USL Cup.

As for Fernández, the debut is done. Yellow card and all.
