Senegal land in one of the toughest groups at the 2026 World Cup — France and Norway for company, with a coach still finding his footing at international level. This isn't a gentle run-in. It's trial by fire from day one.

Pape Thiaw's side carry the weight of being Africa's most decorated squad on paper, with Sadio Mané still the figurehead, Kalidou Koulibaly marshalling the backline, and a genuinely deep midfield built around Pape Matar Sarr and Lamine Camara. Nicolas Jackson's inclusion at Bayern adds a finisher who's developed considerably in the past two seasons. On their day, this squad can hurt anyone.

Group I: No room for a slow start

The opening fixture against France on June 16 is as difficult a debut as you'll find at this tournament. France will be heavily favoured, and the market will reflect that — but Senegal have beaten them before, and Mané has a habit of producing in the matches that matter. A draw wouldn't be a disaster. A defeat by two or more, and qualification pressure builds fast.

Norway away is arguably the trickier tactical puzzle. Erling Haaland's movement creates problems Koulibaly has rarely had to solve at this level, and Senegal's high defensive line could be ruthlessly exposed. The June 22 fixture looks like the real pivot point of the group.

Iraq on June 26 should be the three points that keep everything alive — but only if Senegal arrive at that game still with something to play for.

Head coach: Pape Thiaw

There's also the background noise of the AFCON final controversy — CAF's ruling that Morocco are champions despite Senegal's on-field performance hasn't been forgotten. Whether that unresolved tension adds edge to the squad or acts as a distraction is something Thiaw will need to manage carefully before a ball is kicked in June.

Senegal's World Cup schedule in full:

  • France vs Senegal — Tuesday, June 16, 3pm ET
  • Norway vs Senegal — Monday, June 22, 8pm ET
  • Senegal vs Iraq — Friday, June 26, 9pm ET

Getting out of this group would represent a genuine achievement. Getting out of it with momentum? That's when Senegal become dangerous.
