Sam Erbach had never played a single minute for Florida State before Aug. 13. By the end of it, she'd already scored for them.
The junior midfielder and forward — a transfer from Xavier — opened her Seminoles account in a 4-0 win over Stetson on her very first official appearance. Not a bad way to introduce yourself at a program that's chasing national championships and doesn't have much patience for slow starters.
What she's bringing from Xavier
Erbach didn't arrive at FSU without a CV. In her sophomore season at Xavier, she started all 22 matches, scored 18 goals, and laid on 16 assists — a single-season program record. Her 52 points ranked second in Xavier history. The Big East named her Co-Midfielder of the Year, she earned All-Big East First Team honours, and United Soccer Coaches gave her Third Team All-American recognition.
Those are numbers that don't need spin. She was genuinely one of the best players in the Big East last season.
The jump to Florida State is a significant step up in competition, and Erbach seems clear-eyed about that. "The level is super high, super competitive, and super intense," she said. "Everyone is so good, which makes it a lot easier to get so much better." That's a healthy attitude — not someone coasting on previous success, but someone who understands she's in a different environment now.
What she means for the Seminoles' attack
FSU's goal for the season is another national title — Erbach said it directly: "We all are fighting for another national championship." Her role, as she frames it, is straightforward: score, assist, and be a threat. Given what she produced at Xavier, that's a reasonable expectation rather than wishful thinking.
A forward who can combine 18 goals and 16 assists in a single season adds a different dimension to an attack. Whether she can replicate that output against tougher defenses in the ACC is the real question — and the answer will go a long way toward determining how serious FSU's title push is this fall.
Her dad was in the stands for the Stetson win. Her sister's coming Thursday. Her mom and dad Sunday. The family clearly follows closely — and so far, they've had something worth watching.
