Michael Carrick Keeps Manchester United Job Despite Como Thrashing, But Julian Nagelsmann Lurks.

Michael Carrick will not be sacked as Manchester United manager ahead of Sunday's Premier League match against AFC Bournemouth, according to The Mirror, despite Wednesday's humiliating 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como.

The loss left United with just two wins in 11 matches across all competitions this season. Carrick is nonetheless set to keep his position for now and will front a press conference on Friday to preview the visit of Bournemouth to Old Trafford.

The decision comes after Carrick publicly criticised his players' performance against Como and amid a well-publicised dispute with captain Bruno Fernandes.

Speaking after the Como defeat, Carrick said: "We might win, we might lose, but the way we went about it tonight, I wouldn't say everyone, but the way we went about it in some ways tonight wasn't acceptable. And I just wanted to let the fans know that I feel for them, for sure."

He added: "It wasn't just the goals, if I'm totally honest. It was the manner and the way we played at times, in the way we went about it, that was the difficult thing to watch for me."

Carrick also addressed the pressure of his role, saying: "It's not about playing for me, it's about playing for this football club. It's the responsibility that comes with being in the position; I'm responsible for the football club and the supporters." He continued: "I'm giving my best, absolute best all the time, I care about it. My whole life's wrapped around it. I genuinely give everything that I possibly can."

Despite the club's decision to stand by Carrick for now, former Bayern Munich and Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann is among those attracting attention at United should the club choose to move on from Carrick in the coming weeks. It is understood Nagelsmann would be receptive to any approach from United.

The Telegraph had previously reported, following the Como defeat, that United were considering Nagelsmann as a possible successor to Carrick. Nagelsmann has been without a club since leaving his role as Germany coach after a disappointing World Cup exit.
